Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has more power than anyone else before him in the same chair after both the contract he signed with the club specifying this level of authority over the signings and after his ability to pull Spurs out of the brink of relegation impliclty confirmed his status.
De Zebri has been able to bring in his pick at center back in Jan Paul van Hecke of Brighton for 60 million euros, and the next two big signings on his radar are midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, who could potentially be a combined 200 million euro investment for the Lilywhites this summer after their second straight 17th placed Premier League finish.
Tottenham, though, have been quieter on the attacking end, but that is not for a lack of interest. Besides the continued links to Savinho of Manchester City on the wings, Michael Bridge of Sky Sports said in an appearance on the Last Word on Spurs show that Roberto De Zerbi would like Spurs to sign a new striker this summer transfer window.
Tottenham need goals this summer
This isn't the first we have heard about Spurs and De Zerbi mulling over a new striker, and most fans would agree that at least one new No. 9 with a real penchant for scoring goals needs to be brought in. Randal Kolo Muani's loan from PSG was beyond disastrous, Richarlison is expendable again despite leading the team in goals (a stat that partially highlights the extent of the problem), and Dominic Solanke was also poor despite a brief purple patch after his initial return from a foot injury.
The problem for De Zerbi and Tottenham is that striker has become an even more premium position in the modern game, owing to the lack of talented strikers in the world who can play well all around and still even threaten for 20 goals in a season in a league like the Premier League. Aside from Erling Haaland, there really is no top, killer No. 9 in the Premire League anymore, and the next best striker in the top flight right now might very well be Hugo Ekitike of Liverpool.
Tottenham are going to have to think hard about who they want to go for at striker, and it will be interesting to see if De Zerbi has any Serie A gems in mind or any up and coming stars in leagues like the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 whom he believes can make that leap to N17.
