Conor Gallagher was not a popular signing for Tottenham Hotspur fans last winter, as the club overpaid to snag him over Aston Villa at the last second amidst a slew of injuries in the midfield, even though his box to box profile was not the big need for Spurs after Rodrigo Bentancur's ailment - and he blocked off Lucas Bergvall's path to the starting lineup even more.
But while Gallagher drew the ire of supporters for playing poorly in his first months at Tottenham, Roberto De Zerbi came into the team and was a big believer in the England international. And Gallagher's performances improved markedly under De Zerbi, as the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid midfielder proved beneficial in Spurs staying safe from relegation.
There have been whispers about potentially dangling Gallagher as a transfer this summer, but most of those whispers have come from the fans themselves than rather top reporters, mostly because Tottenham fans don't want to see the team have to sacrifice a disgruntled Bergvall this summer, especially with Nottingham Forest interested in the player.
Conor Gallagher is going nowhere
But Roberto De Zerbi love Conor Gallagher and, realistically, Gallagher isn't going to generat any value on the transfer market, as it already took Atletico Madrid at least a year to sell him - and, quite frankly, nobody is going to be as foolish as Tottenham Hotspur were and overpay for him like that.
If there were any doubts about who may be the odd man out in the Tottenham midfield this summer transfer window to make the numbers work after the 185 million pound Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes acquisitions, then De Zerbi pretty much made it clear that it won't be Gallagher sacrificed.
The Italian manager told reporters ahead of the big friendly against rivals Chelsea, via Lillywhite Rose, “I consider Conor a top player and a top guy. I think he it is more important to me a good guy than good player, but he is both. When Conor is good and in a good condition, we play with one player more because he is like two players."
Even the biggest critics of Gallagher's have to admit that De Zerbi is on the money here. Gallagher is a great person in the locker room who never causes problems, works his tail off, and will play any role asked of him. He is not out for his own minutes or glory, and he won't complain. And he has been successful in the Premier League before, both for Crystal Palace and Chelsea. He wasn't bad for Tottenham either once De Zerbi came in. His future at Spurs is sealed under RDZ.
