Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager, and, for better or for worse, he is the guy the fans now have to back as the coach who will both lead Spurs out of the Premier League relegation battle and then into a new era long term.
First, he must choose his tactics and how to integrate his ideas into the current squad, which has promising talents but is also flawed in many ways. Aside from working with young gems like Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, and Mathys Tel, Tottenham fans will be intrigued to see how De Zerbi utilizes veterans on the bubble.
He will no doubt be familiar with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, and while the transfer rumor mill is already linking him with the goalkeeper he recruited for Brighton, Dutchman Bart Verbruggen, who has clearly outplayed Vic this season, he may not give up on the Italian international so easily.
Tottenham could keep Guglielmo Vicario
According to a report from Italian transfer reporter Marco Barzaghi on his YouTube channel, Roberto De Zerbi wants to convince Guglielmo Vicario to stay with Tottenham Hotspur, “Roberto De Zerbi has been officially appointed: Watch out, because he wants to convince Vicario to stay in England. Ignore those already talking about a contract with Inter Milan, that ‘Inter insider’ from Radio Tristeza makes something up every day.”
While Tottenham fans should await bigger sources in Italy like Gianluca Di Marzio or the most reliable outlets covering Spurs locally, Barzaghi has a decent track record in Italy and is particularly plugged in to Inter Milan, who are the overwhelming favorites to sign Vicario this summer transfer window as a replacement for veteran Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
And honestly, it would make sense for De Zerbi to want to keep Vicario, though it would be highly presumptive for him to be actively convincing Gianluigi Donnarumma's backup to commit to Spurs when he hasn't actually seen him play after this hernia surgery.
If the hernia has been a huge reason for Vicario's struggles, then you would expect him to jump from being the Premier League's worst statistical goalkeeper of the 2025/26 season back to being one of the better keepers in the league after recovery. And if he does, then selling Vicario and creating an even bigger need at the goalkeeper position suddenly doesn't look like such a grand idea. How De Zerbi views Vicario is an interesting storyline, among the many, to stay peeled to these next several weeks.
