Tottenham Hotspur have a goalkeeper situation to monitor this summer transfer window, as Guglielmo Vicario is expected to leave the club after a dreadful season. Although young backup Antonin Kinsky has looked like a real star between the sticks over the last several weeks of the Premier League relegation battle and has the full backing of most of the supporters, Spurs are still after other potential keepers to compete with Kinsky for the No. 1 as Vicario's replacement.
Leeds United's Karl Darlow is on the list, as are others, but the biggest name is undeniably Manchester City No. 2 James Trafford, who had initially signed on at the Etihad last summer from Burnley with the intent of being the No. 1 before Man City went ahead and bagged Champions League hero Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG.
Trafford is, by far, the dream option for Tottenham and maybe the only name Spurs supporters would accepet to join the beloved Kinsky as the Czech shot stopper's competition. But Roberto De Zerbi is also eyeing another interesting name for the goalkeeper position.
Tottenham are after another goalkeeper
Per a report from Portuguese outlet A Bola, via The Spurs Express, Tottenham Hotspur are considering lining up a summer transfer for Anatoliy Trubin, the 24 year old Ukrainian goalkeeper from Donetsk who is now the starter for Benfica. But before playing in the Portuguese top flight, Trubin was already a breakout star at the Champions League level as an elite prospect for Shakhtar Donetsk, starring under De Zerbi as part of the club's surprise side that once shocked Real Madrid.
Trubin has registered save percentages above 70 in each of his three seasons with Benfica, including a clip of 76.1 under Jose Mourinho last season. He has pretty consistently been around the 40 percent average for clean sheets, too.
But while Trubin has been good for Benfica and Donetsk with highlight reel saves that have caught plenty of attention on Champions League highlights, those who watch him more closely at Benfica will note that the young shot stopper has flaws pretty similar to that of Guglielmo Vicario, who was alos highlighted more for his positives at Empoli and highlight reel saves than for the negatives that became more apparent at a bigger club.
Trubin's command of the penalty area is questionable, and he can make some bad mistakes. There is a lot of potential in Trubin with high highs, but it's hard to see him being a better goalkeeper than Antonin Kinsky if the last few weeks of Kinsky are any indication.
