Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear that he wants to keep Mathys Tel. This is despite Tel being linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur, and reports that Savinho could be joining the club.

football.london has reported that "before Tel departed on his summer holidays the 21-year-old had a conversation with De Zerbi about his future in which the Italian made it clear that he would be counting on him next season and that he had no intention of allowing him to leave the club."

Tel arrived at Tottenham from Bayern Munich with big expectations. However, he scored just four times and made two assists in 38 games in all competitions.

The France Under-21 international did play an instrumental role in helping keep Spurs in the Premier League. He set up Richarlison's winner against Aston Villa. Also, he found the back of the net in a 1-1 draw with Leeds United. Therefore, it is no surprise that De Zerbi wants to keep him at the club.

Mathys Tel and Savinho are different players

After an overall disappointing season for Spurs, there have been rumors that Tel could be on his way out of the club. He has been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt, AFC Bournemouth, LOSC Lille, and FC Porto.

A return to Germany with Frankfurt could be one way in which to get his career back on track. The same could be said about his going to Lille, as Rennes was Tel's first professional club. Moving to Porto and playing in a less competitive division could be a step backwards to go forward.

Bournemouth has helped develop some top players recently. They will also have European soccer next season, which Spurs cannot offer.

Tel is predominantly a center-forward, but needs to improve on his goal return if he is to play regularly in that position. Last season, he was often used on the left wing. Savinho is a left-winger who can also play on the right. Therefore, he would not be a direct replacement for Tel if he were to join from Manchester City. There is a chance that both Tel and Savinho could play together. This could be what De Zerbi was alluding to in his conversation with Tel.

Savinho was used sparingly by Pep Guardiola last season. He played in just 24 Premier League games, scoring just once and providing two assists. This cost him a place in Brazil's roster for the World Cup. However, regular game time at Spurs could get him back to his best. De Zerbi has a big job on his hands to turn the club back to its former glories from one that nearly went down last season.
