Tottenham Hotspur's new manager Roberto De Zerbi has already paid dividends, as the Italian coach gave Spurs what they needed in the biggest possible way, saving them from relegation to the EFL Championship just when the Lilywhites seemed like they were dead to rights.
De Zerbi has gotten Tottenham to believe again, and now is the time to back him to the fullest. Spurs are already doing that, because after confirming the free agent deals for Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi that they were already working on before De Zerbi's arrival, they are about to sign Savinho from Manchester City and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.
The negotiations with Man City are still in the works for the complicated Savinho signing, but there is optimism Tottenham can finally land their biggest dream target on the wings, whom they were interested last summer transfer window, too.
Van Hecke is all over Tottenham
But Van Hecke feels imminent. The Dutch international reportedly only wants Tottenham, and while most fans had already suspected the positivity regarding the signing was due to the close relationship between the center back and the manager from their days together at Brighton, that has now been confirmed.
In an appearance on the Last Word on Spurs show, top journalist Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph confirmed just how pivotal of a role Roberto De Zerbi has been playing in the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from the Premier League side.
Law says that there were actually clubs that pulled out of the sweepstakes for Van Hecke despite initially showing interest in the Brighton star because they saw how interested Tottenham Hotspur were and gave up hope because they saw the Dutchman was only focused on Spurs anyway.
The journalist said that Van Hecke is "enthralled" by De Zerbi, and their relationship is to the point where Van Hecke is like a son to the Tottenham manager. Law stated, “Some of the clubs who are interested in him have just backed away, they feel it’s not worth trying to get him whilst De Zerbi is trying to get him.”
That is an incredible example of how closely De Zerbi can bond with players, and Tottenham fans will hope that the likes of Micky van de Ven or even Luka Vuskovic become that close with De Zerbi at the center back position.
But Law's information also speaks to the pull a top manager can have, and De Zerbi bringing able to sign these kinds of players for Spurs makes him a huge asset.
