Tottenham Hotspur were torn to shreds by rivals Brentford in their 2026/27 Premier League season opener, and it is no coincidence that after the shocking display Richarlison had at the striker position, Spurs immediately sealed the Omar Marmoush deal on Sunday morning to bring in a much needed center forward.
Now, the Marmoush deal was already well within the works and touches away from being finalized after the signing of Savinho, who only did not play for Tottenham against Brentford because not enough time had passed between the signing and the game for him to be registered - let alone prepared for Roberto De Zerbi's tactics.
Tottenham still have one more potential star to add to the Manchester City duo of Marmoush and Savinho in Liverpool's Cody Gakpo, who had the best weekend of them all by scoring in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.
Richarlison destroyed the benefit of the doubt
The worst weekend of the forwards, of course, goes to Richarlison. Even before Omar Marmoush's arrival, Dominic Solanke and Richarlison together were on the chopping block, and while Richy's team leading 11 Premier League goals last season seemed to make him safe, especially with Solanke unavailable, his horrendous performance against Brentford brought back all the memories of his issues.
Richarlison is not a viable striker in the Premier League, and while he can be a decent backup because he works so hard and is able to get opportunistic goals, the sudden narratives against him after the 3-0 loss to Brentford are not totally reactionary. Spurs, after all, had been trying to sell Richy for a couple of transfer windows already and were already contemplating his sale this summer, too.
As with Dominic Solanke, whom Roberto De Zerbi seems to be a big fan of at press conferences, Richarlison's future at Tottenham Hotspur is 100 percent in the hands of the head coach. He now has a third center forward option in Marmoush who is better and more dynamic than the current three he has, and if he signs Cody Gakpo on top of Marmoush, then he potentially has four.
Richarlison may have played himself out of Tottenham with how poorly he performed against Brentford, and while some will argue that it was just one game, the reality is that Richy has been subpar since arriving at Spurs, falling over himself and producing uneven displays like this one. If De Zerbi wants him around as a veteran backup, he can stay. But if he wants to roll the dice on Solanke and sees him as a higher upside option, Richarlison is ripe to be sold.
