Roberto De Zerbi shocked a lot of Tottenham Hotspur fans by openly naming Richarlison as a player who wanted to leave, and Richy responded in kind with a cryptic social media post about how he is being unfairly made to be the villain.
Well, if he wasn't the villain before, then De Zerbi has succeeded in making him the villain now. Because with Spurs agreeing to a 60 million pound deal for a third blockbuster attacking signing and a very exciting winger whom Spurs fans have been dreaming of in Everton Iliman's Ndiaye, Richarlison has nixed the deal by rejecting a return to Everton, presumably over the fact that his wages would have likely been halved by the Toffees in order to facilitate a move when comparing Ndiaye's wages.
Ndiaye will, therefore, not move to Tottenham even though a deal had already been worked out, and many Spurs fans feel that Richy partially did this out of spite. He loves and is loved at Everton to a degree greater than Tottenham, but Richarlison will now stay, fully free to leave to the Toffees as a free agent in the winter transfer window - because there is no way De Zerbi and Spurs extend the option in his contract after what the Italian manager did in throwing him under the bus.
Richarlison has become the unfair villain now
Richarlison, for all his flaws as a player, never stopped fighting and running for his team, and just like at Everton, he played a crucial role in fighting to help Tottenham Hotspur avoid relegation just when they were dead to rights. The Brazilian international also led Spurs with 11 Premier League goals last season.
But while he was favored to stay over Dominic Solanke this summer transfer window once Spurs bought a new striker, after his disastrous performance on Matchday 1 in a 3-0 loss to Brentford, Roberto De Zerbi saw the opening to sign Omar Marmoush and give Richy the boot instead, especially after Big Dom scored and played decently well against a much easier opponent in Charlton Athletic.
While Tottenham fans obviously could have their qualms about Richarlison's actual quality, nobody could say a darn thing about his character or question his effort. He was always beloved and someone Spurs fans could compliment. Now, many Spurs fans have turned on him, and Richarlison suddenly sees himself becoming the villain as he approaches his final days at the club.
