It wasn't necessarily a game worth celebrating, as Tottenham Hotspur ended up racking up another loss anyway, but Spurs 5-3 defeat to PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday night was certainly a much more watchable affair than their embarrassing 4-1 North London Derby defeat to Arsenal - a match that will forever live on in infamy.
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank still has a lot of work to do going forward, but at least he was able to answer his most pressing need after the PSG game. A loanee from PSG, striker Randal Kolo Muani was the true bright spot for Spurs, contributing to all three goals and almost single handedly willing this downtrodden attack into a game that Ballon d'Or candidate Vitinha was thoroughly dominating.
Though Kolo Muani could not quite cut it in Paris, he was a brilliant player before that for Eintracht Frankfurt and showed flashes of those brilliance while on loan at Juventus last season. In fact, the Serie A giants badly wanted to keep the Frenchman aboard, but Fabio Paratici and Spurs were able to coax him from Paris to London on transfer deadline day this summer.
Tottenham got their breakout performance
It took Kolo Muani quite some time to get healthy and have his own breakout performance for Tottenham to show what he can do, but scoring two goals and an assist against a team like PSG on a Champions League night - while playing for a team that has been as bad as Spurs have been offensively of late - is an accomplishment worth praising.
Tottenham have been desperately searching for someone to step into the striker position and play like a star, and at long last, Kolo Muani rose above the muck to do so. Yes, Richarlison may have got in on the proceedings again, but anyone who watched that goal knows that full credit goes to RKM for the brilliance and presence of mind to deliver that header right in the Brazilian's path in the six yard box.
Kolo Muani has the touch, passing ability, hold up play, physical tools, and even the smashing finishing (as PSG saw on Wednesday night) to be Spurs best solution at striker. When he's healthy, Dominic Solanke will have his say, but right now, the striker position is unequivocally Kolo Muani's to own after that display. Spurs fans have been asking all season long who the solution at striker is, and before the January transfer window, RKM has stepped in to be the answer.
