Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi is now pushing to totally overhaul the midfield after already transforming the defense, finalizing the completion of the back line in his image with the 60 million euro signing of Jan Paul van Hecke, his former pupil at Brighton with whom he holds a close relationship with.
Now, Spurs are focused on the midfield. Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes are the two main dream targets for the new manager, with Tonali sitting atop the list. And Tonali may be close to a move to Spurs, as the Lilywhites are finally closing in on meeting Newcastle United's 85 million pound valuation for the Italian international.
There is now a third exciting name being linked to Spurs by. top transfer reporter, and it is a top young Premier League midfielder whom Spurs supporters have been hoping the club would pursue for at least a year now.
Tottenham are after a third blockbuster transfer
According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, Tottenham Hotspur "are preparing to test" the resolve of London rivals Crystal Palace with a bid for their gem holding midfielder Adam Wharton, widely viewed as the best young regista in English football (the other candidate would be, of course, Spurs very own midfielder Archie Gray). Ornstein confirms that arch rivals Chelsea and European giants Real Madrid also remain interested in Wharton.
The 22 year old shone brightly on the big stage as Crystal Palace won the Conference League Final, and Wharton had a handful of assists in another excellent season for the Eagles, enhancing his reputation as a player who has already arrived as one of the best deep lying playmakers in the Premier League and is ready for that next big move.
An upgrade over Rodrigo Bentancur, Adam Wharton could combine with Archie Gray to form a fearsome tandem at the base of the midifeld for years to come. And although they do not play the same position in the midfield and Spurs should still try to keep him, the impending exit of 20 year old prospect Lucas Bergvall could make another midfield splash possible.
Mateus Fernandes looks like the defensive midfield upgrade on the veteran Joao Palhinha, and Sandro Tonali is almost guaranteed to be the Roberto De Zerbi pick to lead the base. But many Tottenham fans would stlil love to see Wharton signed, if not as an alternative to one of the other deals falling apart but as a third blockbuster deal to overhaul Spurs poor - and massively overrated internally by some fans - midfield .
