Wayne Rooney lauds Ange Postecoglou's first season with Tottenham
Ange Postecoglou joined a Tottenham side full of uncertainties after the disastrous 2022/23 season. The Greek-Australian boss has made a notable impact on his team, even though they're not fighting for the Premier League title this season.
As stated before, Postecoglou wants to build a competitive team more than clinching a Champions League berth this season, and recent games have shown that Spurs are on the right track to compete for big things next campaign.
These performances have turned heads around the Premier League and it's more common to see Postecoglou getting his flowers after every matchday. Following the statement win against Nottingham Forest over the weekend, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney had nothing but good things to say about the 58-year-old boss.
“Yeah I think with the way they play,” Rooney said when asked if he would have liked to play under Postecoglou (h/t Optus Sport).
“What’s really impressive is how quickly the players have bought into how he wants to play and we’ve seen that as soon as the season started.
“The pre-season he had with them you can see he did a lot of work with them players to get them to understand how they want to play. We’ve seen it at Celtic, seen it in Australia and Japan where he’s won titles.
“I think it’s really refreshing because he’s always honest in his interviews as well, whether the team’s done well or whether they haven’t played so well, so I think he’s going to be a top manager in this league.”
The former Celtic boss has been successful whenever he's gone, which made Spurs supporters dream about the things he can bring to the table. He's made it clear he wants to collect silverware with Tottenham and that's become the main goal for the next season.
The fast-paced playstyle Spurs have shown this season has been refreshing, as Rooney said, considering how they played under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Antonio Conte. Taking advantage of their speed, with the lines placed high on the pitch and always attacking the spaces, Spurs have presented an appealing brand of football to their fans.
Right now, they sit fourth in the Premier League standings with 60 points and one game in hand on Aston Villa. If they keep up the good work, they can secure European football for next season and perhaps can challenge the top teams for the Premier League title.
