Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping a close watch on former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes, who is nearing the end of his contract with Lille. According to HITC, the 24-year-old Gomes, currently in the final year of his deal with the French club, has become a notable target for Spurs as they look to strengthen their midfield options.

Gomes has been turning heads since he joined Lille in 2020. His performances in Ligue 1 have earned him significant praise, and he has emerged as one of the standout midfielders in the league over the past year. His impressive form has also led to a call-up to the England squad by new boss Lee Carsley.

Tottenham, who were in the market for a midfielder during the summer transfer window, have been reportedly impressed by Gomes’s development and are considering a move for him. The North London club has been searching for a dynamic central midfielder, often referred to as a “number eight,” to bolster their squad.

If Gomes opts not to renew his contract with Lille, a Premier League return could be on the cards. Tottenham might find themselves competing with other top-flight clubs eager to sign him. Spurs could look to secure Gomes in January, potentially bringing him in before his contract ends, or they might choose to hold off and try to snap him up on a free transfer next summer.

If Lille decides to sell Gomes in January, they would aim to secure a transfer fee rather than risk losing him for free. This could prompt a mid-season transfer battle, with Tottenham positioning themselves as serious contenders for his signature.

It's clear that Gomes has developed significantly during his time at Lille, and to be honest, signing players from Ligue 1 is always a good idea; just look at the evidence. If Tottenham can secure him for free or for a reasonable fee in January, I’d consider it a fantastic signing for the club.
