According to journalist Dean Jones, transfer correspondent at GiveMeSport, Spurs have "set their sights" on Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes.

They report that Spurs are still after an energetic midfielder, which adds up with what The Athletic said earlier this summer.

Gomes, 23, joined Wolves from Brazilian club Flamengo in January of 2023 and has impressed with his performances for the West Midlands outfit.

Whilst not a defensive midfielder per se, Gomes is a very tenacious midfielder and averaged 3.8 tackles per game in the Premier League last season.

For context, the most tackles any Spurs player averaged last season was Yves Bissouma's 2.9, nearly a whole tackle per game fewer than Gomes. In a game against Brentford last winter, Gomes made 10 tackles in 90 minutes. (SofaScore).

The midfielder made his debut for Brazil against England in March this year and started all four of Brazil's games at the Copa America in the summer.

Gomes has four years remaining on his Wolves contract, however - highly reputable journalist John Percy of the Telegraph has said that Wolves remaining transfer budget is £20m, despite the sales of Pedro Neto and Max Kilman - so they may see a need to sell players in order to bring in the players they want - which could play into Tottenham's hands.

Whilst the Spurs faithful are crying out for a defensive midfielder, Gomes' aforementioned tenacity could be what they need in the midfield.

He would have put out some of the fires that Leicester City caused on Monday. His general energy, ability to cover ground, and capabilities of driving forward could be the perfect fit for an Ange Postecoglu side.

He scored both goals in Spurs' 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves back in February, so even if he doesn't work out in any potential deal, at least he will be unable to do that again.

Whatever happens, it promises to be an intriguing final 10 days or so of the summer transfer window.
