Tottenham Hotspur have officially announced that Alejo Veliz will be spending the 2024/25 season on loan at La Liga side Espanyol. This move is a big deal for the young Argentine forward as he tries to bounce back after a tough time with Sevilla last season.

Veliz, who turned 20 this year, struggled for game time at Sevilla, where he found it difficult to secure a regular spot in the starting eleven.

His brief spell in Spain’s top division did not go as planned, with limited opportunities to showcase his talents at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. However, the promising forward will now return to Spain, this time with Espanyol, as they prepare for their La Liga campaign.

Espanyol, which secured promotion to the top flight via the playoffs last season, has been actively strengthening their squad ahead of the new campaign.

The Catalan club hopes that Veliz can provide the necessary spark and help them establish themselves in La Liga, ensuring they can maintain their top-flight status.

For Veliz, this loan is a great chance to get more playing time and show what he can do. Tottenham’s coaches, including Ange Postecoglou, will be keeping an eye on how he performs at Espanyol. If he does well in Spain, it could open the door for him to play a bigger role at Tottenham down the line.

Notably, there has been no mention of an option to buy in Veliz’s loan agreement, according to journalist Alasdair Gold. This means the deal is just a simple loan with no current plans for a permanent move.

Tottenham probably made sure that Espanyol promised Veliz would get plenty of playing time, as his development is important for them.

Veliz’s departure to Espanyol adds to a list of notable exits from Tottenham this summer. With Joe Rodon, Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele, and Bryan Gil all leaving, either permanently or on loan, the club is undergoing a significant reshuffle.
