Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Middlesbrough’s rising star, Hayden Hackney.

The North London club have been keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old midfielder throughout the opening games of the Championship season, with their scouts impressed by his performances.

Tottenham have had a long-standing interest in Hackney, and his impressive displays last season have only strengthened their desire to bring him to the Premier League.

Hackney’s development as a player, along with his versatility in midfield, have caught the attention of several top-flight clubs. However, it appears that Tottenham are particularly eager to secure his services.

Despite the growing interest from Spurs, Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick is determined to keep Hackney at the Riverside Stadium. Carrick has reportedly made it clear to the club’s board that Hackney is crucial to the team’s ambitions this season.

Hackney joined Middlesbrough’s academy at the age of 10 and has steadily risen through the ranks to become a key figure in the first team.

After a loan spell at Scunthorpe United, where he gained valuable experience despite a controversial six-game suspension, Hackney returned to Middlesbrough and flourished under Carrick’s guidance during the 2022-23 season.

He was named the club’s Young Player of the Year and even got a nod for the Championship Young Player of the Season. Last season, Hackney played in 28 games across all competitions, scoring twice and setting up two more goals.

Although Hackney remains under contract with Middlesbrough until 2027, Tottenham’s growing interest suggests they may test the club’s resolve to keep their star midfielder.

Tottenham have been paying close attention to their midfield this summer, particularly after losing key players like Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Oliver Skipp. With Giovani Lo Celso also on his way out, Spurs are keen to find a replacement.

For a while, it looked like Conor Gallagher was their top choice, but he ended up choosing Atlético Madrid, so Tottenham are now exploring other options.
