Tottenham informs 25-year-old player he is not in their plans
Tottenham Hotspur might be preparing to part ways with goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman, according to Spurs insider John Wenham.
Whiteman’s future at Tottenham appears uncertain, particularly with Brandon Austin now solidifying his position as the backup to first-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Recent observations from Tottenham’s pre-season tour have highlighted a shift in the club’s goalkeeping hierarchy. Austin featured prominently, playing in all five of Spurs' pre-season matches.
In contrast, Whiteman’s participation was limited to a brief substitute appearance. This stark difference in opportunities has made it clear that Austin is currently ahead of Whiteman in the pecking order.
Whiteman, who joined Tottenham's academy in 2015, has spent much of his time with the club either as a backup or on loan. His most notable first-team appearance came in a UEFA Europa League match against Ludogorets Razgrad in 2020.
Despite extending his contract with Tottenham in February 2023, Whiteman’s chances to feature regularly for the senior squad have been sparse. His two loan spells in Sweden with Degerfors provided him with valuable experience, but regular first-team football at Tottenham has remained elusive.

Wenham suggests that with Whiteman’s contract set to expire next year, this summer may be the optimal time for both the player and the club to consider a move.
Allowing Whiteman to seek opportunities elsewhere could benefit him by providing regular playing time, which he has struggled to find at Tottenham. For Spurs, it would free up some resources and let them focus on other areas they need to strengthen.
With Guglielmo Vicario firmly established as the number one goalkeeper and Fraser Forster and Brandon Austin as reliable backups, Whiteman’s route to regular first-team action appears increasingly blocked.
Moving him on could be a pragmatic decision for Tottenham, allowing Whiteman to pursue a more prominent role and helping the club balance its squad.
