Tottenham contract rebel could leave for free in 2025 instead of this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are prepared for the new season ahead. They will face newly promoted Leicester City on Monday evening, the final match of the first gameweek. Of course, the Foxes are no strangers to the Premier League, having great history in the competition.
By this point, Ange Postecoglou has likely decided his strongest lineup. Assuming there are no more astronomical deals that take place before the summer transfer window ends in a couple of weeks, the foundations are already in place for Tottenham ahead of the new campaign.
As things stand, there is one player in the Tottenham setup who might not be in for a fruitful season in terms of game-time. Nevertheless, that same player is likely to stick with the club for the season.
Tottenham contract rebel could leave for free in 2025, not this summer
According to a report from Football Insider, Ben Davies is set to stay at Tottenham Hotspur for the 2024/25 season. It will be the final year of his current deal with the club but it is believed to be mutually beneficial for both parties if the Welshman sticks with the squad.
Needless to say, Tottenham will then run the risk of losing another player for free. Assuming he then isn't sold in the January transfer window, Davies will be free to discuss pre-contract agreements with other clubs.
Unfortunately, it has become all too common for Tottenham to lose their players for free, whether it be through loan deals or contract expiration. The reality of the matter is that it doesn't only impact Tottenham and could be a byproduct of the changing footballing ecnomy, whereby Profit and Sustainability guidelines now force teams into being more frugal with their expenditures.
Ben Davies has been a loyal asset to Tottenham Hotspur, this goes without saying. He has been with the club for a whole decade now, after signing from Swansea City in 2014. During this decade, Davies has made 225 appearances for Tottenham. Therefore, his experience could come in handy at key moments of the upcoming campaign.
Another interesting lens to view this decision through is the benefit to the homegrown quota. Alongside Djed Spence, Ben Davies would be one of two homegrown players in the Tottenham squad, fulfilling their obligation to the homegrown quota and saving them money from external signings.
