Tottenham boss makes bold claim on competition with Man City, Arsenal
By Manuel Meza
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has sought to calm fans’ concerns with a reassuring declaration regarding the club’s ability to compete with the league’s elite, namely Arsenal and Manchester City.
Postecoglou, who is no stranger to pressure, had set lofty ambitions for Spurs at the start of the season, reflecting his track record of success in second seasons with previous clubs. His confident predictions were built on the belief that Tottenham could swiftly bridge the gap to the top teams.
However, with only one win from their opening four matches and recent defeats to Newcastle and Arsenal, the reality on the pitch has not yet aligned with those ambitious goals.
In his latest address, Postecoglou acknowledged the evident gap between Tottenham and the Premier League’s top tier but remained optimistic about overcoming this challenge. He emphasised that recognising the gap is a crucial first step towards addressing it. “You have to acknowledge it. That’s the starting point,” Postecoglou stated:
"If you think there isn’t a massive gap, then it kind of defeats the purpose. That shouldn’t be daunting. It shouldn’t make you think it’s insurmountable. I certainly don’t think it is."

Despite the criticism, Postecoglou is staying upbeat, believing a turnaround is on the cards if the team stays disciplined and sharp. His high-energy, attacking style of play is bold but has highlighted some defensive weaknesses.
Postecoglou’s reassurance is timely for Tottenham supporters, who have seen their team struggle to meet early-season expectations. While the squad’s defensive capabilities, particularly the back four, are considered strong, the high-risk, high-reward nature of Postecoglou’s tactics has led to vulnerabilities.
The detail here is that words need to be reflected in results. Personally, I have no doubt that over time, Ange will find a positive stability, based on his tactics and continuity. However, how willing the most loyal Tottenham fans are to wait and trust in words remains to be seen. For the moment, Postecoglou’s position does not seem to be at risk.
