Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is on the verge of joining French giants Olympique Marseille in a permanent transfer.

Per Fabrizio Romano, Marseille are closing on a deal to sign Højbjerg, having agreed personal terms with the player, and close to agreeing a fee with Spurs.

Fabrizio stated that Marseille's recruitment team Pablo Longoria and Mehdi Benatia are "on it" with Spurs.

Some saw this summer's European Championships as a chance for Højbjerg to put himself in the shop window, and it appears that he has done exactly that.

Højbjerg was praised for his performances defending the colors of Denmark this summer and won MOTM in their 1-1 draw vs England on June 20th.

Ironically enough, one of Højbjerg's best moments in a Spurs shirt was against Marseille. On the final matchday of the 22/23 Champions League group stage, with the score at 1-1 in the Stade Vélodrome, Spurs sprung a counterattack deep into injury time, and Højbjerg latched onto a through ball from Harry Kane to send Spurs into the Champions League knockout stages top of the group with a superbly taken finish.

Højbjerg joined the club in the summer of 2020 from Southampton for a fee of around £15m and has played an impressive 184 games in Lilywhite since then, scoring 10 goals in the process.

That said, a lot of those games were as a substitute over the last season. To show how his game time dropped under Ange - he played exactly 36 league games in both the 21/22 season and the 23/24 season - but started 28 fewer games in the 23/24 season, with just 8 starts in the league.

Højbjerg certainly had his ups and downs, but was a warrior who always gave 100% for the shirt, and genuinely cared. I'm sure he will head to France with the best wishes of all the Spurs fans and staff.
