According to Argentine journalist Lautaro Alvarez, Spurs midfielder Giovani Lo Celso is close to joining Aston Villa.

Lo Celso joined Spurs, initially on loan, in the summer of 2019 from Real Betis but has consistently found game time hard to come by, and spent 18 months back in Spain on loan at Villarreal, from January 2022 to the summer of 2023.

There is no doubting the midfielder's quality, as he has shown consistently whilst defending the colors of Argentina. This has led to several people asking - "If he can do it for the world champions, why can't he do that for Spurs?"

In truth, Lo Celso has never really had a consistent run in the team to show what he can do. He had a few starts whilst James Maddison was injured last season, and even scored in back-to-back games, against, ironically, Aston Villa, and against Man City in that eventful 3-3 draw.

Lo Celso will be leaving compatriot Cristian Romero, but joining Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia in the West Midlands. He will also be coached by fellow Spanish speaker Unai Emery, which should help him settle.

Spurs midfielder close to moving to Villa, midfielder coming the other way

The talk from Lautaro Alvarez and Argentine outlet TyC Sports is that Jacob Ramsey will be coming the other way, with Spurs giving Villa £19m + Lo Celso for the English midfielder.

Ramsey has shown a lot of promise for Villa, especially when Emery initially came in, but struggled with injuries last season, only managing to start 8 Premier League games as a consequence.

If he is over those injuries, however, Ramsey would be a good addition for Spurs. In the 22/23 season, he played 35 Premier League games, starting 31, and showed several good performances, capped off with 6 goals and 7 assists.

He would add some dynamism to a Spurs team that often lacked exactly that last season. He is able to create separation with his dribbling and movement and will be able to open up the pitch when Spurs need it, particularly against stubborn deep blocks. He also of course counts as a homegrown player.
