Spurs loan watch: Tottenham youngster nominated for award
By Tom Vinall
Spurs youngster Alejo Veliz has been nominated for La Liga's U23 Player of the Month award for August, having joined newly promoted RCD Espanyol on a season-long loan from Spurs early in the month.
Veliz has started every game for the Catalonia-based club since arriving and scored a dramatic winner deep into injury time last time out against Rayo Vallecano to give his side their first win of the season and top off a great week, having picked up a respectable draw away to Atletico Madrid in the game before that
Whilst he may not have found the net before that game, the on-loan Spurs striker has put in some battling performances and put himself about in a side that does not have much of the ball and does not create many chances. That work has not gone unnoticed, and it is good to see he has been acknowledged for these performances with this nomination.

He is in very good company, too. Also nominated for the award are Lamine Yamal, Pablo Barrios, Raul Moro, and Christantus Uche. Due to the performance and prestige of the first two players, particularly Yamal, it would take a hell of an effort for Veliz to win this award, but the fact he is in this sort of company is an achievement in itself and one he should be very happy with.
The Argentine striker has not been called up to represent Argentina at any level over the break, due to the idle nature of the youth teams in Argentina and how he isn't quite ready for the senior side, so this break is a good chance for the youngster to settle in properly.
He joined the club not long before the season began, and the games have been coming thick and fast, so there has not been too much time on the training ground to get fully settled in until now, so this could come as a great opportunity to get his feet fully under the table.
