Spurs loan watch: Sucker punch for Tottenham youngster
By Tom Vinall
It was a heartbreaking start to life for Jamie Donley at Leyton Orient, falling to defeat in stoppage time in their showdown with fellow London side Charlton Athletic.
Donley had an impressive pre-season campaign with the Spurs first-team and was rewarded with a new contract until 2029 and a loan to League One outfit Leyton Orient.
It is well documented that Leyton Orient, who were then also in League One, was the first loan move for a certain Harry Kane - and everyone will be hoping for that to be a good omen.
The Spurs youngster was shown a great leap of faith by Orient manager by being thrown straight into the starting line-up, despite only signing the day before the game. He started as a number ten, in Richie Wellens's 4231 formation. The teenager made an immediate impact, finding Ollie O'Neill inside the box with a slide rule pass, as his shot was well blocked.
Donley was substituted by Wellens after seventy minutes for Diallang Jaiyesimi, with the score 0-0.

In those seventy minutes, Donley recorded one chance created, 3/4 ground duels won, 1/2 aerial duels won, one foul drawn, two clearances, and two tackles. Nothing out of the ordinary, but a solid debut for someone making their first-ever senior start.
As a result of the last-minute goal conceded, Orient are now on two defeats from two in the league and face high-spending Birmingham City next up - who Donley was linked with earlier in the window.
They did however beat Newport County 4-1 in the first round of the Carabao Cup, and they also have an EFL Trophy game at home to Arsenal U21s early next month that no doubt Donley would love to play and score in.
