Tottenham Hotspur may have subtly positioned themselves for a significant transfer coup in the upcoming summer window, thanks to a well-orchestrated deal on the final day of the recent transfer period. This move not only saw the departure of Giovani Lo Celso back to his former club, Real Betis, but it also laid the groundwork for a potential future signing that could prove crucial for Spurs in the seasons ahead.

On transfer deadline day, Tottenham facilitated Lo Celso’s return to Real Betis on a four-year contract worth €5 million. While this deal might have seemed like a straightforward transfer at first glance, it carried more weight than initially perceived. Reports have emerged suggesting that as part of this transaction, Tottenham secured an option to sign Johnny Cardoso, a promising USMNT international midfielder currently plying his trade with Real Betis.

This move by Tottenham grants them the first refusal on Cardoso, with a pre-agreed transfer fee set at €25 million. Real Betis president Ángel Haro confirmed this arrangement, putting Tottenham in a prime position to secure the 22-year-old’s services if they choose to activate the clause when the transfer window reopens.

Betis' sporting director, Manu Fajardo, pointed out how crucial Lo Celso’s transfer was in setting up this potential future deal with Tottenham. In a recent chat with DAZN (h/t Marca), Fajardo admitted that Lo Celso’s move was key in Tottenham securing their option on Cardoso, hinting that the London club’s interest in the young midfielder is anything but casual:

"(Lo Celso) has played an important role in terms of his (Cardoso’s) rights for the future. Leaving next summer? It would depend on Tottenham and other offers that come in."

For Tottenham, this setup shows a shrewd and forward-thinking approach to transfers. By securing first refusal, they’ve given themselves the chance to watch Cardoso’s progress in La Liga before deciding. If he continues to shine, Spurs can activate the clause and bring him to North London.
