Romero impresses once again for Argentina
By Tom Vinall
Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero has yet again been endlessly praised for his performance in an Argentina shirt.
Romero’s Argentina kicked off the 2024 Copa America with a 2-0 win against Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The Spurs defender put in another monstrous display. Partnering Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United, Romero played the full 90 minutes. He completed 91/93 passes, made 4 passes into the final third, completed 7/8 long balls, 3 clearances, 1 interception, 6 ball recoveries, 6/6 ground duels, and committed 0 fouls, as well as of course keeping a clean sheet (SofaScore).
Spurs fans have known how good Romero is for 3 years now, and in Argentina, he has been liked for a while. But it is good to see the outer, neutral world finally realizing how imperious the Spurs' central defender is, rather than following agenda-based narratives.

Romero is still an aggressive defender, it’s a big part of why he is so good - but he does so in a more disciplined way these days. He isn’t as rash or reckless as he used to be. As touched on above, he made 0 fouls in 90 minutes last night, and to no detriment of the team (he didn’t need to make any tactical fouls, etc).
Since Romero debuted for Argentina in 2021, he has accumulated 32 caps for La Selección. In those games, Argentina has won 24 games, kept 24 clean sheets, conceded 11 goals - and won a Copa America and World Cup (Squawka).
Cristian Romero is an incredible defender and people are finally starting to agree.
