On summer transfer window deadline day, Tottenham Hotspur secured a lesser spotted type of agreement as part of their sale of Giovani Lo Celso to La Liga side Real Betis on transfer deadline day.

For a two week period of next summer's transfer window, the club will have the option to sign Johnny Cardoso from Betis for a fee of around £25 million pounds.

It had been reported earlier in the window that this was the case, and now the president of Betis has confirmed it himself.

Betis president Angel Haro was recently asked about the agreement with Spurs, and told Spanish media outlet AS:  “It would be something interesting for everyone, it would mean that we would also have an added value.

In short, if there is a transfer in which there is a capital gain for Betis, Tottenham would have a percentage of it. There is also a purchase option for them, but it would be high and positive for us if it were to happen.”

There is excitement in the States about Cardoso, who joined Betis from Brazilian side Internacional in January of this year. He is a regular for the USMNT and featured in their Copa America campaign over the summer. Owing to the intense schedule of Brazilian football, Cardoso has already played 184 senior games in his career, despite only turning 23 tomorrow. As a result, a lack of experience should not be an issue despite his age.

There is still clamour within the Spurs fanbase for an out and out defensive midfielder who is capable of putting out fires, and according to the players' Transfermarkt page, Cardoso has played more games as a defensive midfielder than any other position. He has also shown impressive versatility over his career, playing in multiple positions and roles over the past few years.

The development of Cardoso is certainly one to keep an eye on.
