Pundit makes Eberechi Eze claim amid Tottenham links
By Manuel Meza
Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze attracted significant interest from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window but stayed put at Selhurst Park despite early predictions of a potential move. Ally McCoist, a well-known figure in football commentary, recently shared his thoughts on this turn of events.
McCoist expressed his surprise that Eze did not leave Palace, particularly given the heavy rumours linking him to Spurs. Early in the transfer window, Eze was prominently featured on Tottenham's wishlist. The attacking midfielder had a release clause set at £60 million plus add-ons, which many believed would be activated by one of the interested clubs.
However, despite the high-profile interest, no official offer materialised for Eze before the transfer window closed. The situation was further complicated by the timing of the release clause, which expired a couple of weeks before the window shut. This lapse in time may have played a crucial role in the player’s continued presence at Palace.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish also voiced his astonishment at the lack of movement regarding Eze. Parish expressed his surprise during an interview with Sky Sports, where he admitted that he expected more clubs to show interest in the 25-year-old.
McCoist concurred with Parish’s sentiments during his talkSPORT appearance on September 4, 2024 (h/t Spurs Web). He acknowledged Eze’s exceptional talent and expressed his own surprise at the player’s continued stay at Palace. McCoist noted that earlier in the transfer window, there were concerns about several key players potentially leaving Palace, including Eze. Despite this, he was pleased that Palace managed to retain such a crucial player.
One factor that may have deterred Tottenham and other potential suitors could be the complicated nature of Eze’s release clause, which required a significant upfront payment. Additionally, Tottenham’s decision to forgo a move for Eze might have been influenced by the impressive performances of Lucas Bergvall during pre-season.
