Pundit makes claim about Tottenham's potential free agent move
By Manuel Meza
Speculation about Tottenham Hotspur’s next moves has shifted towards the potential signing of free agents. However, recent insights from Alasdair Gold suggest that Spurs fans shouldn’t hold their breath for any immediate additions to the squad from the pool of unattached players.
According to Gold, Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, has very specific criteria when it comes to bringing in new talent. The Australian coach, known for his meticulous approach, is reportedly not keen on short-term or stop-gap signings, a stance that might disappoint sections of the fanbase who are eager for more proven quality in the squad.
This summer, Tottenham completed several key deals, including the record-breaking signing of Dominic Solanke. While the club's hierarchy, including Postecoglou and new director of football Johan Lange, appear satisfied with their business, some supporters feel the club should have done more. The absence of high-profile signings, particularly in positions where depth could be a concern, has left some supporters questioning the club's board.
The free agent market offers a range of experienced players, with names like Adrien Rabiot, Anthony Martial, and Memphis Depay still without clubs. These players could theoretically bring valuable experience and quality to Tottenham’s squad. However, Gold has cast doubt on the likelihood of Postecoglou moving for any of these players unless the squad is hit by significant injuries.

In a recent Q&A session with football.london, Gold explained that Postecoglou is reluctant to sign players who do not fit his specific system, emphasizing that if the Australian coach had wanted any of the available free agents, he would have moved for them already. Gold noted:
"Postecoglou is always talking about not signing short-term, stop-gap players for the sake of having another body. He only wants players that fit his very specific system."
Gold pointed out how Postecoglou was quite picky during the transfer window, especially when it came to signing centre-backs. The gaffer was clear that he wouldn’t just sign someone for the sake of it, emphasising his focus on long-term planning and ensuring the squad fits his style of play.
While some fans may feel that Tottenham missed an opportunity to strengthen further, Gold believes that the squad is in a good position.
