Opposition preview: Coventry City ahead of Tottenham clash
By Tom Vinall
On Wednesday night, Spurs travel to the Midlands to face Coventry City in the third round of the Carabao Cup. It has already been a more productive campaign than last season, where Spurs were dumped out by Fulham in the second round.
So, what can we expect from Coventry on Wednesday night?
The Sky Blues are managed by Mark Robins, who has taken Coventry from League Two to the Championship, and one kick away from the Premier League, where they lost on penalties to Luton Town in the 2023 Championship play-off final.
They have consistently pushed towards the higher end of the Championship since they won the League One title in 2020, though narrowly missed out last season after some poor end-of-season form.
All you need to know about Coventry City ahead of tomorrow
A big reason for that end of season form, however, was their fantastic run in the FA Cup, where they cruelly fell short in the semi final against Manchester United, being a Haji Wright toenail away from completing arguably the most iconic comeback this sport would have ever seen. They had beaten Premier League Wolves 4-3 in the quarter-finals in an absolute classic cup tie.
That cup run just goes to show what they are capable of in domestic cups, and that Spurs should not underestimate them in any way. The aforementioned HajI Wright has serious caliber, a player that has scored in the World Cup knockout stage - and will be a constant threat should he be selected. Ellis Simms offers hold up play up front, as well as physicality in duels and a goal threat.
Ben Sheaf in central midfield is someone who has been tipped for Premier League moves, and Jack Rudoni in the number ten role offers them guile and creativity. Milan van Ewijk at right-back is a very quick and tricky player. All of the mentioned names, plus others, will be serious threats that Spurs must take very seriously.
Spurs will be the favourites for this game, but nobody should be fooled into treating this game like an exhibition match on the way to better things. Ange Postecoglou's side will need to be on their game to win this one.
