Former Man City star compares Tottenham attacker to Dennis Bergkamp

After Tottenham Hotspur beat Man United 3-0 away from home, a former Man City star has compared a Tottenham star to Dennis Bergkamp.

Tottenham Hotspur play in the UEFA Europa League tonight. They will face Ferencváros in the second match of the competition. However, they bring with them fresh confidence from the Premier League.

This is because at the weekend, Tottenham went to Old Trafford and scored three goals without reply. Without a doubt, it was their best performance so far this season and perhaps the best ever under Ange Postecoglou.

Many ex-professionals and even current professionals have come forward to heap praise on Tottenham for their performance. However, Arsenal fans will not like this one.

Former Man City star compares Tottenham attacker to Dennis Bergkamp

Speaking after the match, former Man City star Shaun Wright-Phillips compared Dejan Kulusevski to some of the roles he remembers Dennis Bergkamp taking on for Arsenal.

Shaun Wright-Phillips says that, in the same way Bergkamp used to, Dejan Kulusevski operated as the second striker but at times, he would drop deeper to help bridge the attack-midfield gap.

In his own words, Wright-Phillips said: “It almost, when I was watching the game, it reminded me a tad of some of the positions say Dennis Bergkamp would pick up. Back in the day, it was 4-4-2, but Dennis used to always drop away from the frontman, into those spaces in between the midfield and the defence."

Of course, Dejan Kulusevski is not comparible to Dennis Bergkamp in terms of technical ability. However, Kulusevski's role is very similar to that which Bergkamp and other great centre forwards used to operate.

In the last few seasons, there has been an increased usage of players in this role. Most notably, it was glamorised again by Roberto Firmino at Liverpool, helping Liverpool to win the title.

Dejan Kulusevski has been one of Tottenham's most consistent players over the last few seasons. While external validation doesn't matter, it's nice to see him getting his flowers in the media.
