Are Tottenham heading in the right direction? Son and Maddison weigh in
By Manuel Meza
Heung-min Son and James Maddison have both expressed that there are plenty of positives to take from Tottenham Hotspur’s season, yet both players emphasized that there is still significant room for improvement.
The season started on a high note for Spurs, but the final couple of months saw a severe dip in performance, with the team struggling towards the end. Despite missing out on Champions League qualification, the squad remains optimistic about the club's direction under Ange Postecoglou.
Son’s take on Tottenham's team spirit and resilience
Son Heung-min, the Tottenham captain, highlighted his pride in the team's unity and their response to challenges. Reflecting on the 2023-24 campaign, Son shared his thoughts on the club’s official website:
“Collectively, from the more regular starters to those coming on, everyone has been so supportive and has wanted to improve. I’m so appreciative of that because it has helped bring everyone together.
“Sometimes, when we’ve been in a tough moment, this group has shown that everybody is ready to play for this team and I’m really pleased to see that as captain.
“I really appreciate everyone that’s come into the squad, even young players like Mikey Moore who has been training with the group and working really hard, it’s great to see these kinds of things.
“Generally, across the whole season, it’s been very positive, and we’ve been making steps forward. Obviously, there is still room for improvement, but the overall positive energy suggests it’s been a great season.”

Maddison’s view on the season’s progress
James Maddison pointed out the challenging position the club was in before the season began, especially with the managerial change and Harry Kane’s departure. He believes that the season provides a solid foundation for the future.
The former Leicester City player stated: “I would say it’s been a positive season, yes. New manager, a bit of an overhaul, losing the club’s best-ever player on the eve of the first game… a lot of pundits had their say on what our season would look like, and we’ve stayed in and around the top four, top five, and we finished eighth last year, so, it’s improvement – not where we want to be – but looking back, on reflection once the season’s done, we’ll be able to take positives from it and build for next year.”
While the season showed signs of progress, there were also alarming moments towards the end. The squad’s performance in the upcoming season will be crucial. A strong start is essential to maintain the players' confidence in Postecoglou’s system.
