Archie Gray transfer is bad news for 4 current Tottenham Hotspur players
By Kian Long
Tottenham Hotspur officially announced the signing of Archie Gray yesterday. The former Leeds United youngster will play in the Premier League under Ange Postecoglou next season, which is great news for the club. However, what impact could it have on the current squad?
Well, currently there is a multitude of midfielders at Tottenham, with only a select few showing any real desire to play for the club. This is the exact reason why Archie Gray was brought in, as Ange Postecoglou sees him as a young player who can bring energy, dynamism and a fresh approach to the midfield ranks.
As mentioned, though, not every player will benefit. Here are the four current Tottenham Hotspur players who could struggle with Archie Gray now in the pecking order...
Archie Gray transfer is bad news for 4 current Tottenham Hotspur players
1. Yves Bissouma
Towards the end of the 2023/24 season, Yves Bissouma saw a gradual reduction in his minutes. This could easily be down to fitness concerns but it equally doesn't look good for Tottenham fans looking in. As a player who occupies the defensive midfield role and was struggling for minutes recently, Bissouma will not feel entirely optimistic about Tottenham bringing in a new defensive midfielder.
2. Pape Sarr
In my opinion, Pape Sarr is a better option for Tottenham Hotspur than Yves Bissouma. However, the Senegal international is not safe in the starting eleven either. When Rodrigo Bentancur is fully fit and in good form, he provides more to the Tottenham team. Therefore, a Bentancur, Gray and Maddison midfield partnership might be an exciting prospect for Ange Postecoglou, demoting Sarr in a rotational role.
Tottenham Hotspur fans are not under any misconception about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Unfortunately, it seems obvious that the Denmark international will leave the club this summer. He has grown surplus to requirements and for whatever reason, Ange Postecoglou does not love him in the starting lineup.
While it was known for some time beforehand, the Archie Gray transfer essentially confirms that Hojbjerg will be on his way out this summer.
4. Oliver Skipp
Oliver Skipp has proven that he can do a solid job for Tottenham Hotspur. While he has never been a sure starter, the midfielder would have liked to pick up more minutes next season. Admittedly, as a like-for-like player, it will not fill him with optimism to see Tottenham sign Archie Gray from Leeds.
