Djed Spence has not had it easy at Tottenham Hotspur. The defender has struggled to pick up a consistent run of games since he made his first team breakthrough. It was believed that being sent out on loan would provide a fix but instead, Leeds United had enough of him and sent him back Spurs midway through last season.

That said, since 2024, there have been glimmers of hope when it comes to Djed Spence. The defender was sent on loan to Genoa and had a better time there than he had with Spurs and Leeds United. So, a glimmer of optimism returned.

But still, the chances of Djed Spence breaking into the Tottenham team upon his return were seen as slim. After all, Ange Postecoglou had built a pretty impressive team while he was out on loan, so it had only become more difficult for Spence to make a name for himself when he returned.

Ange Postecoglou will give struggling Tottenham defender one last chance

Ange Postecgolou is outspoken but he isn't unfair. He's proven to be an excellent man-manager, who is capable of bringing the best out of players. His management style is tailored to each player, and doesn't pidgeonhole himself or his players into certain boxes.

So, Ange has provided a fair summary of Djed Spence, after the defender impressed and got on the scoresheet against Hearts in pre-season.

Speaking post-match to Sky Sports News (h/t HITC), Postecoglou said: “Everyone has the opportunity. Ultimately, those kinds of things are decided by how people perform and where they fit into the overall structure. But Djed has been good. He has obviously had a tough couple of years. He is there training. I thought he did really well (against Hearts).”

As mentioned, Ange Postecoglou is a fair manager who gives his players equal opportunity. Pre-season is a great time for head coaches to play around with their teams and tactics ahead of the upcoming campaign, noticing weak spots and areas of potential.

Djed Spence proved against Hearts that he provides a lot of potential to this Tottenham team. Hopefully, he can settle back in and make the most of his opportunity, assuming he's not sold this summer.

Do you think Djed Spence deserves a chance at Tottenham?
