Tottenham Hotspur’s recent 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park has left many fans and pundits alike scratching their heads. Despite dominating the match and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Spurs once again found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreline.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou expressed his frustration with the outcome but remains confident that his side will eventually get the results they deserve if they continue to play at their current level.

The match followed a familiar pattern for Tottenham this season. From the first whistle, Spurs took control of the game, dictating the tempo and keeping Newcastle pinned in their half for large stretches. The midfield trio worked tirelessly to regain possession and launch attacks, while the defence, for the most part, kept Newcastle’s forwards at bay.

However, the story of the match was Tottenham’s wastefulness in the final third. Time and time again, Spurs managed to break down Newcastle’s defence, only to falter at the last moment with a misplaced pass or a weak finish. Postecoglou’s frustration was palpable in his post-match comments:

"Another one that got away from us. We played well enough, certainly had the chances to win the game comfortably, but you walk away with nothing, so it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but it is what it is."

Defensively, Spurs were uncharacteristically sloppy. Newcastle’s goals were less about the home side’s brilliance and more about Tottenham’s lapses in concentration. Both goals came from situations where the Spurs defence was caught flat-footed, allowing Newcastle’s forwards to exploit gaps and score with relative ease. However, Postecoglou remains optimistic. He believes that if his team continues to play the way they have been, the results will eventually come:

"The positives are our football was good and has been good in all three games. We have to get the rewards for our football, and what I do know is that if we continue to play like that, we will get our rewards."

At this stage of the season, Tottenham supporters might be frustrated by the lack of points, but there are plenty of reasons to be hopeful. The team’s performances have shown a marked improvement in controlling matches compared to last season. While there is still work to be done in terms of finishing and tightening up defensively, Spurs are heading in the right direction under Postecoglou’s leadership.
