According to TuttoJuve, Tottenham are in an excellent position to secure the signing of Jonathan David, the 24-year-old Canadian striker currently playing for LOSC Lille in Ligue 1. While this rumour isn't new, it's worth revisiting.

David is renowned for his versatility, speed, and power. In this article, I'll outline three reasons why I believe Tottenham should pursue his signing. Let’s dive in.

3 reasons why Tottenham should sign LOSC Lille's Jonathan David

1. Versatility and compatibility

Jonathan David is widely recognised for his role as a central striker, but his versatility extends beyond this position. Thanks to his speed, acceleration, and agility, the Canadian international can easily adapt to various attacking roles, including as a 'false nine' or even as a winger. Moreover, despite being right-footed, David is comfortable using his left foot, allowing him to play on the opposite flank without issues, thus providing more tactical options for the coach.

Looking at the 2023/24 season statistics from DataMB, David outperforms Dominic Solanke in non-penalty goals, expected goals (xG), expected assists (xA), and passes into the box. This doesn’t mean David should necessarily replace Solanke, but rather highlights how David’s presence could complement and enhance Solanke’s role as a traditional centre-forward.

2. Media and commercial impact

Let’s touch on some non-footballing aspects. Jonathan David, though born in New York, represents Canada on the international stage. The Lille striker is a major figure in North America, a region with significant commercial potential and English-speaking populations. Signing David could be a golden opportunity for Spurs to attract hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of new fans across the Atlantic.

Additionally, David already has notable recognition in Europe, particularly in France. It’s no surprise that clubs like Paris Saint-Germain have previously shown interest in him.

3. Price and contract situation

Despite having a high market value of €50 million according to Transfermarkt, David’s contractual situation with LOSC Lille makes him a relatively affordable option. His contract runs until June 2025, meaning Tottenham could potentially secure him at a reduced price if they make a move in January. Alternatively, pursuing him in the summer of 2025 could see David arriving on a free transfer, presenting an excellent opportunity.

At present, Jonathan David is also attracting interest from top clubs such as Juventus, Inter Milan, Arsenal, and, of course, PSG, who have previously shown interest and continue to monitor his performances closely in the French league. Would you like to see Jonathan David join Tottenham?
