Pedro Porro sent a crystal clear message to Achraf Hakimi

PSG right back Achraf Hakimi has won back to back Champions League titles and is widely viewed as the benchmark at the position in world football, and while he did have a great World Cup for quarterfinalists Morocco, he had a rougher time in their elimination game against France, a 2-0 loss.

Meanwhile, only superstars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland, who are scoring serious goals this tournament, have a higher WhoScored rating at the World Cup than Tottenham Hotspur right back Pedro Porro. And unlike Hakimi, Porro is headed to the World Cup semifinals after his Spanish side got the job done against Belgium 2-1, even though, thanks to a Charles De Ketelaere header out of nowhere (shoutout to Randy Orton), they finally conceded at the tournament.

Porro was beyond brilliant again on that right hand side, shutting down Jeremy Doku, who had to resort to the sort of shameless diving that only a ref as mindless as Michael Oliver would buy into. Doku had a large share of the ball but did nothing with it, as Porro shut down shop while also getting forward quite a bit against his Belgian counterparts.

Pedro Porro's class is showing

The 26 year old finished the match with four combined dribbles completed and fouls drawn on the offensive side for La Roja, and then he had two tackles and an interception on defense to lead all defenders and midfielders on Spain in defensive interventions. And furthermore, on the ball Porro completed 88 percent of his 75 pass attempts with three long balls and three crosses.

While Pedro Porro had a difficult 2025/26 season under Thomas Frank, he started to look world class again by the end of it under a much better manager in Roberto De Zerbi, with Spurs playing considerably better football as a whole.

The Spanish international has been even better as a cog on a top team in the World Cup, and Achraf Hakimi may have to think twice about considering himself by far the best right back in the world. Because at this World Cup tournament, it has been the Tottenham Hotspur player - and not the PSG icon - who has trumped all right backs as the best in his position this summer.

Roberto De Zerbi made it one of his first orders of business this offseason to make Porro untouchable with the same two clubs that could have signed him instead of Spurs a few years ago, Manchester City and Real Madrid, putting out feelers. Porro is showing his class now.
