Roberto De Zerbi has a lot of power at Tottenham Hotspur both as stipulated in the contract that brought him to the sinking ship and implicitly held further after he saved Spurs from a seemingly doomed trip to the EFL Championship.

His most controversial order of business may be the dogged pursuit of his former Brighton star center back Jan Paul van Hecke, but among his least was the verve to get right back Pedro Porro extended right this second. Porro had a rough patch in the 2025/26 Premier League season when everything was going south for the Lilywhites, but when De Zerbi took over, Porro was crucial and back to being one of the best right backs in the English top flight.

It did not take long for Tottenham to make Porro untouchable. After his incredible display on Matchday 38 in the relegation sparing win over Everton, Porro was on a one way ticket to a new contract. Real Madrid and Manchester City resumed their interest in signing Porro, but Spurs told them to step off.

Pedro Porro is not a flawless player

Now, per Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur officially have Pedro Porro locked down. The 26 year old right back has signed a contract extension through the 2030/31 Premier League season with an additional team option for 2031/32. So Porro will be locked in at the club for five more years until he turns 31 with, obviously, a wage increase to boot.

While Porro is one of the better right backs in the Premier League and the only real right back in the squad with Djed Spence only playing on the left these days, there is one red flag Tottenham need to keep in mind with a five year extension that will keep Porro past his prime.

Not everyone was terrible when Spurs were sliding into relegation, and Tottenham fans have to be wary of the players who showed poor character and let the standard slip. On some level, it was not their fault because when things fall apart and seem hopeless under a manager who basically plays to lose, it is hard not to fall into that trap. At the same time, players like Mathys Tel, Archie Gray, and even Richarlison never quit or gave up hope or yelled at the fans or other players, but Porro was in that group that was negative.

Porro is also not the best player in terms of his technique or reading of the game. His best asset is the effort, and when he does not show effort, he is a liability, which was the case for several months. And that is something Tottenham fans also have to worry about, because as he nears 30 as a right back and the wear and tear sets in, he is not going to be as effective of a player: the inaccurate crosses, individual errors in one on one defense, and mental lapses are going to be magnified more.

It was important for Tottenham to keep Porro and avoid losing their only option at right back, a crucial starter who is arguably top five in his position in the league. However, Tottenham need to remember that he is not a flawless player and on a five year deal, there are serious long term concerns, and Spurs, as a club, need to continue to push Porro to be better in the future.
