Tottenham Hotspur have high hopes for new forward signing Omar Marmoush, who can play on either the left wing or in a center forward position. Spurs have started him in the latter spot in his first two games over Dominic Solanke, in the hopes that he can be the answer to their goal scoring problem, as Solanke's own track record at Tottenham since coming over after what may have been a fluke 19 goal 2023/24 season with Bournemouth has been less than impressive.
Marmoush did not score in the 2-0 loss to Newcastle United, but he was highly promising, creating three chances and winning three dribbles in a dynamic debut that showed flashes of that lightening in a bottle he captured in the 2024/25 season that made Manchester City buy him that winter transfer window from Eintracht Frankfurt.
But Marmoush struggled badly against Nottingham Forest in a 0-0 draw. He was just as culpable as Mathys Tel on the ball, turning the ball over frequently, and it almost felt, that like the younger Tel, Marmoush was the victim of trying to do too much.
Omar Marmoush missed a lot of chances
Not only did he show a bit of his inexperience as a top level starter in the Premier League - as he was mostly on the bench last season at Man City - but he also squandered quite a few chances. He did not pass when he should have passed, and his finishing chops were that of a player who, indeed, was converted to play striker and not necessarily a natural born No. 9.
Tottenham Hotspur saw the ugly side of Omar Marmoush against Nottingham Forest. Every player, except maybe legends like Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, has one, and Marmoush is not a perfect player, which is why Manchester City were even open to selling him to another Premier League Big Six club in the first place.
What Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs have to do in weighing his performance against Nottingham Forest is to trend how he does as a center forward in the next games, especially with better support as Mohammed Kudus and Destiny Udogie round into fitness and Savio and James Maddison are able to return to the starting lineup.
These are big boosts around Marmoush that should help the Egyptian international increase his attacking output, but De Zerbi may have to worry that the Forest performance is a sign that being the No. 9 may not be the right fit for the new signing.
