Tottenham Hotspur have finally signed a new starting center forward this summer transfer window, and even though the Cody Gakpo deal with Liverpool never actually went anywhere, Spurs fans can still be very happy that the organization has brought in Omar Marmoush from Manchester City.
The Egyptian international managed to be fit enough to start in his debut on Saturday afternoon against Newcastle United, and you can only imagine how much uglier things could have gotten for Spurs in their 2-0 loss to the Magpies without Marmoush.
He did not get on the score sheet, but he did create three chances and complete three dribbles as the only competent member of the Spurs attack with Pedro Porro putting in a predictably ghastly shift as a right winger while Mathys Tel had a performance that even Randal Kolo Muani would cringe at on the left wing.
Tottenham's attacking problems are grave
Marmoush's great debut was, overall, positive news for Tottenham Hotspur, but the biggest takeaway from how well he played is a concerning one. If Marmoush is that much better than what Spurs have a striker or even on the wings, then it really shows you how dire the attacking quality is in this squad. Things will definitely get better when Savio and Mohammed Kudus are healthy enough to join Marmoush in the XI, and Tottenham are not resting one bit with Iliman Ndiaye set to join as another explosive winger addition.
The problem is that even when Omar Marmoush has a great all around game, Spurs are not able to get on the score sheet with how poorly they are playing elsewhere in the attack. Marmoush is definitely going to need those other guys to help him out.
Tottenham are realizing just how terrible their attacking problems are, and they are still, honestly, in serious trouble as a team, because if Marmoush is their best goal scoring option right now, then he might be the only scoring option on the team - and he is more of an all around difference maker than someone who poaches 20-30 goals in a season.
Spurs are going to have to figure out where the goals are going to come from, and you can see why Roberto De Zerbi is so fixated on players like Savio going from being wide playmakers to better scoring options off the wing. Marmoush is talented but is going to need some help, and he himself is going to need to step up as a scorer for Spurs, too.
