Tottenham Hotspur are having a hard time figuring Omar Marmoush out. The set to be 60 million pound signing from Manchester City was not terrible in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, creating a trio of chances with three dribbles completed in a winning effort as the de factor No. 10 with James Maddison out, but, once again, he failed to be truly decisive and was less brilliant than either Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus on the wings.
Almost by default, Marmoush is the main No. 9 option for Tottenham, but that's because Richarlison destroyed his reputation to Roberto De Zerbi while Dominic Solanke has been the worst player on the team - and maybe even the worst striker in the Premier League this season, at least among teams that could credibly challenge for a Champions League place this year.
But Marmoush has failed to inspire on the wings, as a 10, or as a 9. It's entirely unclear what his best position is, and, really, he hasn't done anything to change that narrative about him from his Manchester City days.
Omar Marmoush can't be a scapegoat already
Omar Marmoush was one of the best players in the Bundesliga and scoring more than a goal per game for Eintracht Frankfurt before his move to the Etihad Stadium, but he was made expendable in the end by the Citizens and sold to Tottenham Hotspur because he could not assert himself as a game changer at the Premier League player - let alone entrench himself in an actual position or role on the pitch.
Tottenham are still struggling to figure that out even as Roberto De Zerbi has found out a lot about this team and has Spurs winning three straight. But that also does not mean the pendulum swings all the way to the other end with a statement that Marmoush is a total lost cause and a transfer bust.
Marmoush has been decent during this winning streak. He scored a good goal against Coventry and was useful to the team in a dominant win over Crystal Palace. Yes, Tottenham would like to see more from a talented player in his theoretical prime whom they are on the hook to sign for 60 million pounds, but that does not mean is a scapegoat or a fraud. Marmoush has not changed for the better from his City days, but, well, these are also early days for him at N17.
