Tottenham Hotspur have been interested in Cody Gakpo for months now, with Roberto De Zerbi favoring him as a potential supplementary goal scorer for a team that badly lacked goals at all levels and in every starting position in the front three.
But Spurs have already signed two top Premier League attackers in Omar Marmoush and Savio. The former is expected to bring goals and start immediately as the No. 9 once integrated, and the latter has already scored and assisted for Spurs in an appearance off the bench as part of a 5-1 League Cup romping over Charlton Athletic.
Tottenham already have a new starting left winger and center forward to pair with 2025 signing Mohammed Kudus on the right wing, but that has not stopped them from pursuing Gakpo, whose Liverpool future very much hangs in the balance after the acquisition of an even bigger name in Bradley Barcola from PSG.
Manchester City can make life difficult for Tottenham
Although De Zerbi puts Spurs squarely in the running to still sign the Dutch national team star, it sounds like, subtly, Spurs are not in the driver's seat anymore. As Ben Jacobs is reporting in an appearance on Last Word on Spurs, Manchester City could go all in for Cody Gakpo this summer transfer window. If Iliman Ndiaye is not their top target, then Gakpo will be, and Gakpo himself is reportedly surprised that Man City are interested as he did not expect this to be the case.
Tottenham Hotspur are suddenly not the only major players in the Gakpo transfer battle, and after losing Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City in the winter transfer window, they know that the Citizens are immediately favorites over them as a real Premier League title contender.
That does not rule Gakpo out, but after signing Omar Marmoush and Savio, Tottenham actually may have less to offer Gakpo than Man City, who now have the space to sign Gakpo if he is the player Enzo Maresca wants. And Maresca and City could see the versatile inverted wide playmaker as the supplementary goal scorer to replace - or even upgrade on - Marmoush next to Erling Haaland.
It is a complicated situation made very interesting by the musical chairs between Tottenham and Manchester City, and, in a way, Spurs signing Marmoush and Savio could cost them another player Roberto De Zerbi very much wants. Spurs can't complain if they miss out on Gakpo because Marmoush and Savio are two great players for one, but it is funny how Man City's interest is a new nightmare for Spurs in the pursuit of Gakpo.
