Tottenham Hotspur signed Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City this past summer transfer window, but they have nothing to show for it thus far. Even with both in the starting lineup against Everton and Nottingham Forest, Spurs were unable to score, and it has been four Premier League games now that the Lilywhites have failed to put one in the back of the net.
In his column after the game, Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Athletic wrote that Spurs are stuck in a vicious cycle, and he believes that Spurs are too timid in front of goal. Pitt-Brooke wants Tottenham's forwards to take more risks and take more shots on goal, and he believes more attempts will help the club break their cycle of not being able to convert possession into goals.
There are two players, in particular, at Tottenham who will love that mindset, and they are forwards Omar Marmoush and Mathys Tel. These are two inverted left wing and center forward hybrid players who love to shoot and do not need a second invitation to do so.
Omar Marmoush can't let his head drop
So far, Tel and Marmoush have been the ones trying to hit the target the most. But to be honest, Tel has isolated himself too much on the wings, which a frustrated Roberto De Zerbi pointed out to the young Frenchman in the second half of th Everton game, while Marmoush has squandered, by his own admission as well, too many golden opportunities.
But Marmoush has said he intends on shooting and shooting some more until Spurs find the breakthrough, and he will wholeheartedly agree with The Athletic's assertion that Tottenham's attackers do not let their heads drop and continue to make attempts on target.
Tottenham Hotspur are only going to get out of this rut by scoring, and they are only going to score by shooting. Yes, they do need to take smarter shots, but as Michael Sco- I mean, Wayne Gretzky once said, you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take, and maybe some of the shots Spurs passed up on would have been the breakthrough goals they needed to get the full three points against both Nottingham Forest and Everton these past two weeks.
Roberto De Zerbi will have to keep putting Spurs players in positions to shoot and score, and there is no doubt that he will be trying to unlearn the old Thomas Frank adage of not taking shots from outside the box, even if the opportunity test the keeper is there.
