The chronically online faction of Tottenham's fanbase came close to meltdown on Monday morning when a report emerged of an accepted bid from Atletico Madrid for Cristian Romero.

Romero's future remains a big talking point in north London, with the defender previously discussing his desire to play in La Liga amid reported interest from Atleti.

Admittedly, a move to the Spanish capital does make a lot of sense given the Argentinian connection and Romero's potential to flourish under masterful dark arts facilitator Diego Simeone.

Few questions have so far been answered in regards to the centre-back's future, but it seems as if no agreement has been reached with Atleti for the 27-year-old's services.

English media rubbish reports of Spurs accepting Cristian Romero bid

Fernando Czyz (via Roy Nemer) suggested that a deal had been struck 'in principle' between the two clubs worth £55m, including add-ons, sparking panic among the fanbase. Selling Romero would be bad enough, but for that fee? Blasphemy.

Thankfully, those reports were quickly dismissed by the English media, including Sky Sports' Michael Bridge, who said they were 'not true'.

Others have suggested that Atleti, who failed to get out of their group at the Club World Cup, will soon intensify their pursuit of Spurs' vice-captain, but The Times believe they'll have to pay at least £70m for the World Cup winner's services. That's certainly a fairer valuation given Romero's contract situation, with his current deal expiring in 2027.

Romero was undeniably close with Ange Postecoglou, and the timing of his farewell post to the Australian—right after Thomas Frank was appointed—suggested he didn't take too kindly to the decision. The new manager has a big job on his hands to convince Romero to buy in, but Frank certainly has the charisma to do so.

Alasdair Gold notes that Frank wants to keep Romero around for the start of his tenure (duh!), while The Times' aforementioned report adds that the club believe the 27-year-old to be one of the world's best defenders. If that's the case, then I expect a lucrative new contract should be slapped down in front of the Argentine's face if Frank works his magic.

Fitness issues have plagued Romero's time in north London as of late, but his significance to this club was laid bare during our run to European glory in Bilbao. In tandem with Micky Van de Ven, Spurs are blessed with one of the world's premier centre-back partnerships. What message would that send the new manager if they opt to break it up this summer?
