Tottenham Hotspur have made three splash transfers before July has even set in, bringing in Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free agent deals before landing Roberto De Zerbi his favorite center back target in Brighton star Jan Paul van Hecke, whom he had managed at the Premier League club previously.
Spurs are doing whatever they can to support De Zerbi, whose contract with the club includes a clause giving a lot of power behind the scenes, which was only emphasized further by his ability to save the club from Premier League relegation.
The main main De Zerbi and Spurs are focusing on right now is Newcastle United star center midfielder Sandro Tonali, who is another favorite of the Italian manager. Tottenham have been working hard to sign Tonali away from Newcastle, with Manchester City also in the mix.
Tottenham don't sound far away from an agreement
According to a new report from top Italian transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio, Tottenham and Newcastle are only 10 million pounds apart on a final transfer fee agreement. Sandro Tonali's fee from the Magpies perspective has long been 85 million pounds, though some transfer reporters have wafted around a fee as high as 100 million pounds with add ons, and apparently Tottenham Hotspur have just offered 75 million pounds.
What will really stand out to Spurs supporters in the report is Di Marzio's assertion that a final agreement on a transfer of 80 million pounds could be agreed "in the next few days", meaning the Tonali deal could be wrapped up relatively quickly, giving Spurs all their time and effort to then concentrate on the double swoop of the other great midfield target Roberto De Zerbi really wants from a Premier League rival, Mateus Fernandes from relegated West Ham United.
A fee of 80 million pounds for the 26 year old Tonali is a pretty hefty one, especially since Tonali has not progressed a whole lot at Newcastle after being a massive breakout midfielder and a title winner for AC Milan.
But is a fair price when accounting for his talent, how badly De Zerbi wants him, how well he fits what De Zerbi and Tottenham want to do, and what he could become with better coaching than that of the overpraised Eddie Howe. Tottenham are in a great position to seal this deal, and if they can just Tonali for a shave below the originally reported 85 million pounds, Spurs fans will be happy.
