Newcastle vs. Tottenham: Premier League Preview, Predictions & Lineups

Can Spurs stop the rot with an unlikely victory on Tyneside?

Tottenham are hoping to avoid a fourth-straight defeat when they make the long trip up to Newcastle United for a midweek Premier League fixture.

The quick turnaround from Saturday's disaster means Thomas Frank has the chance to atone for recent misgivings by overseeing an unlikely victory. St. James' Park has been a miserable ground for the Lilywhites to visit in recent years, and we've already been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by the Magpies this season.

At the moment, it's hard to project where the next win is coming from, and Frank is under serious pressure given the painful downturn in form.

The home defeat to Fulham leaves us in 12th amid a condensed middle class, with only a couple of wins in succession likely to result in a rapid rise up the table. Newcastle are just behind us despite claiming a 4-1 win at Everton last time out, which was their first away win of the Premier League season.

They've once again been formidable at home, with Manchester City the last team to succumb to the Toon Army and Eddie Howe's rugged outfit.

Here's our preview of Tuesday's Premier League clash.

Aaron Ramsdale earned a rare Premier League start for Newcastle on Saturday, and he could remain in the side on Tuesday with Nick Pope carrying a knock. Ramsdale kept a clean sheet when we visited Tyneside in the Carabao Cup fourth round just over a month ago.

Sven Botman is also carrying a niggle that should keep him sidelined, while summer addition Yoane Wissa has just been left out of the DR Congo's squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. His knee injury has prevented the striker from making his debut for the club.

Nick Woltemade will lead the line on Tuesday, and Harvey Barnes could keep his place as a result of his impressive run of form. Jacob Murphy will likely replace Anthony Elanga down the right.

Former Spurs man Kieran Trippier is out, while Emil Krafth is a doubt.

Newcastle predicted lineup vs Tottenham: Ramsdale; Livramento, Schär, Thiaw, Hall; Guimarães, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Woltemade, Barnes.

Frank's team selections continue to bewilder, and nobody really has an idea what he'll go for on Tuesday. It'd make sense to lean on the physicality of his team, but the boss simply has to include players who'll at least give him a chance of playing through Newcastle.

Cristian Romero's return at centre-back helps the build-up, and I'd love to see youth retained in midfield. Xavi Simons can offer guile from a creative position, but he requires connections around and ahead of him. The inclusions of Destiny Udogie and Wilson Odobert down the left, as well as Randal Kolo Muani up top, should help the Dutchman.

There are no returning players from injury for the trip up to Tyneside.

Tottenham predicted lineup vs Newcastle: Vicario; Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bergvall, Sarr, Kudus, Xavi, Odobert; Kolo Muani.

Newcastle vs Tottenham score prediction

Ultimately, we're a couple of wins on the bounce away from feeling like a connected club again. We football fans are a fickle bunch.

However, it's just hard to imagine us going up to St. James' on what will probably be a soggy and miserable Geordie night and turning Newcastle over in front of the Toon Army. The Magpies are a nightmare to play against under the lights on home soil.

I really hope Frank and his players surprise me, because even a result on Tyneside could be a big boost ahead of a defining run. I just don't see it, though.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham
