The 26 year old Tottenham Hotspur right winger Mohammed Kudus has carried some threat this season since returning from fitness issues, as he had a season ending hamstring injury in the 2025/26 Premier League season that he has been slow to heal from. And steadily, Kudus is showing flashes of his old self as a dribbler, averaging 2.4 dribbles and 1.4 fouls drawn per game despite only starting one match this season, which was his most recent encounter with Manchester United.

Kudus had two dribbles completed and a foul drawn against the Red Devils, and while he had a few bright moments, his overall decisiveness was, again, lacking. The Ghanaian international did have an assist before the September international break as a consolation in the 3-2 loss to Aston Villa, but after only registering two goals and five assists in the 2025/26 season, there have been questions asked about his ability to actually generate goals and assists beyond his dribbling skills.

Tottenham are still waiting for their first win of the 2026/27 season. Dominic Solanke missed two clear chances in the first half but was able to finally score his first of the campaign in the 92nd to rescue a point. But scoring and decisive assists remain the main issue, as nobody has proven to be a reliable scoring threat and only Savio is consistently creating great chances for his teammates.

Mohammed Kudus needs to threaten the goalkeeper

Spurs have dribblers aplenty. Even Mathys Tel was doing a great job of dribbling despite getting benched for a lack of creation or decisiveness in the final third, and Omar Marmoush is also averaging close to three dribbles per game. And Savio is the best statisical dribbler in the Premier League right now with around 4.5 per match.

So Mohammed Kudus isn't actually providing anything useful beyond what his teammates are, and if he does not seize the opportunity on Matchday 7 against Coventry, there may be a low threshold for Roberto De Zerbi to choose a different starting lineup that does not include the former Ajax man.

That is nothing against Kudus, but Spurs need goals. And they can play Savio as an inverted right winger instead of him with Omar Marmoush or Mathys Tel on the left, depending on if De Zerbi wants to keep sticking with Dominic Solanke as a striker or prefers to go with Marmoush and then Tel starting. But those options could yield more goals and shots on goal with inverted wingers, because if Kudus can't provide any scoring threat, which was the case against Manchester United, as a starting inverted winger on the right, then De Zerbi will have no choice.
