Change is coming to the Tottenham Hotspur attack this season, as Savinho will be confirmed in time for the next Premier League fixture against Newcastle United while his former Manchester City teammate Omar Marmoush is expected to join him next weekend, too, as a much, much needed upgrade at the striker position.
Spurs are coming off an atrocious performance against Brentford in which they lost 3-0 and were terrible at all levels, getting trampled in midfield while failing to defend or attack at an adequate level for the Premier League.
Although he did not set the word ablaze by any means, Mathys Tel was the one player on the entire Tottenham team who looked a threat to do anything offensively, recording a couple of key passes with a handful of dribbles completed and some hard pressing and tracking back defensively. Whereas Mikey Moore missed sitters and was disastrous from a wing play perspective while Richarlison constantly tripped over himself in an embarrassment of a performance, Tel at least proved to be somewhat of an asset.
Mathys Tel's dreams of getting starts are not dead yet
Tottenham Hotspur did not have their best attacking player from the 2025/26 Premier League season available due to injury in right winger Mohammed Kudus, and while he has been recovering from a quadriceps injury in January, the ailment has been slower to heal than expected, and Spurs have been easing him back.
Kudus did not get any action at all against Brentford this weekend, and he may not be able to play against Charlton Athletic in the League Cup this week or even against Newcastle United next weekend, depending on his practice availability.
Tottenham fans cannot wait until the all important Ghanian international is available again, as he ws the entire focus of the offense last season before his injury. And when Savinho is confirmed, Kudus and the Brazilian international will be the two starters on the wings with Omar Marmoush manning the middle.
But Mathys Tel is staking his claim for minutes, too, and he was Tottenham's best player in the preseason and also their best attacking player last season after the Kudus injury. With Kudus still working his way back, Tel has one more chance to prove that he belongs in the starting lineup as more than just an afterthought, and Roberto De Zerbi is one of the few managers who would be willing to let Tel compete with massive signings like Kudus and Savinho - or even Cody Gakpo if he is able to join from Liverpool. Tel is still a player worth watching.
