Mikey Moore just put Xavi Simons, Mathys Tel, and Wilson Odobert on notice next season

A new era has dawned on Tottenham Hotspur after the hiring of Roberto De Zerbi as the club's new manager. He was the clear No. 1 target for the leadership duo of Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange, and now it is up to De Zerbi to map Spurs in his tactical image.

His biggest question marks next season will be on the attacking end. Only Mohammed Kudus has been able to distinguish himself positively as a sure fire star and starter in the Spurs lineup next season. The striker situation remains a conunundrum, the attacking midfield spot is an open competition once James Maddison is healthy, and Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert are the only viable left wing options in the current squad - and Odobert just did his ACL a couple of months ago.

But an obvious way to upgrade the attack without spending big or begging someone to join a team in the relegation fight is to recall a suddenly very keen Mikey Moore to join the attack next season after steadily growing into a bigger role and shining with Scottish Premier League powerhouses Rangers.

Mikey Moore names his best roles

In a lengthy interview piece with The Athletic's rising star Jordan Campbell, Moore spoke about potentially joining Tottenham Hotspur next season, touching on where he would feel comfortable contributing in the Spurs lineup. And his remarks have certainly put the young attacking midfield and left wing options who are still proving their worth to Tottenham.

Moore said, “I’ve enjoyed being inside the pitch and making stuff happen on the half-turn, getting at people from there and having options on both sides. My best position is either in that inside left role or as a No 10. I feel a lot more responsibility on the pitch now and have learned the game quickly. Maybe I used to get the ball and think I could do whatever I wanted but I’ve learned when to offload the ball and when to be direct. I’ve got to improve my decision-making in the final third at times but I’ve matured a lot.”

Now, Moore is obviously a different profile to Mathys Tel on the left and Xavi Simons as a No. 10, but he can play these two positions well. And if he were recalled by Tottenham from Rangers this summer, then these are the guys he would be competing with for minutes. James Maddison will be a big factor as Roberto De Zerbi's 10, too, but Simons has the first crack and stands to lose the most from Moore establishing himself as an option in this position.

So all these guys are going to have to be at their best with a homegrown gem like Moore, who is not afraid to make things happen and take risks. Competition brings out the best in the best players who belong at big clubs, so this is good news for Spurs fans if Moore is back in the fold.

He sounds hungry to contribute in a variety of ways. And Wilson Odobert, coming off an ACL tear, will feel especially glad he managed to shine for a few weeks as Mohammed Kudus's replacement on the right wing, because as a hybrid left wing and attacking midfield option in that very same half space on the turn, Odobert would stand to lose the most from Moore emerging in 2026/27.
