Tottenham Hotspur were able to survive Premier League relegation by the skin of their teeth, defeating Everton 1-0 on Matchday 38 behind a colossal defensive effort. The center back partnership of Kevin Danso and Micky van de Ven has been soaking a ton of praise lately from the Spurs faithful after stepping it up with Cristian Romero injured, playing even better without the World Cup winner.
Van de Ven was one of the key players who turned his season around - and Spurs fortunes - quickly after Roberto De Zerbi got the manager job, and Tottenham fans have been increasingly hopeful that both the best version of the Dutchman has been recover permanently and that the player will choose to stay despite transfer links to clubs as big as Real Madrid and Barcelona.
With each passing day, Van de Ven sounds more and more like he is all in on staying with Spurs, contrary to the image captain Cristian Romero appears to be portraying, and after the massive victory over the Toffees, the young center half sounds even more like he is a Spurs player for the foreseeable future.
Micky van de Ven turned his career path around
Micky van de Ven told reporters after the game, via the London Evening Standard, "I think we have the right people now here. The right manager. So yeah, I’m confident we can do more next year because obviously as you said, two years in a row we end up 17th, it was unacceptable, especially for a club like Spurs. Things are going to need to change and we’re going to see that’s going to happen. But we’re going to do everything about it and I’m confident we’re going to do way better than the last two seasons."
It is beautiful to hear those words from Van de Ven, and just like Conor Gallagher, Joao Palhinha, Pedro Porro, and Rodrigo Bentancur, a man who looked like a shell of himself and totally lacking on confidence - maybe even to the point of a bit of apathy - is now back to shining like one of the pillars of the team.
Van de Ven looks more like the guy who played a key role in getting Spurs to lift the Europa League trophy last season and less like the guy whose terrible mental lapses nearly helped get the Lilywhites relegated. Because now, Van de Ven is known as one of the players who helped saved Spurs, and based on his comments, he sounds like a man who is so committed to the team, he is already thinking about how to help next season and build a long term project with Roberto De Zerbi.
