Young Tottenham Hotspur left winger Mathys Tel has fallen into a troublesome spot. After a horrendous performance against Newcastle United in which he was the worst player on the pitch and played a key role in costing his team a chance at getting anything out of the game, a lot of Spurs fans are questioning how good he really is and how much they should entrust in him this season.
Tel had this display after an amazing preseason in which he looked like a great rotational option, with Spurs fans assuming they would land a top right footed left winger. But Cody Gakpo is not leaving Liverpool this summer transfer window, and while the Ndiaye interest almost seemed to accelerate after Tel's awful game against Newcastle, it fell just as quickly after Richarlison kiboshed his return to Everton.
Now, Tottenham do have someone new coming in, as Spurs have signed old Roberto De Zerbi favorite Mykhaylo Mudryk on loan from Chelsea, much to the chagrin of those who had their hopes up for Ndiaye or even Gakpo.
Mathys Tel hoards possession too much
Mudryk is a potential threat to Tel in the Tottenham starting lineup in the absolute best case scenario, but, realistically, Tel is the main No. 2 option to Savio. And Tottenham fans are really worried about how Tel fits the Premier League after his inability to consistently shine against the sort of teams that Spurs need to be beating in order to get back into the top five and the Champions League.
Mathys Tel just cannot pass and create chances at the Premier League level. He seemed to have turned a new leave with two great assists for Mikey Moore against Hoffenheim in his last friendly of an incredible preseason, but that hope quickly dissipated again with just how horrendous he was against Newcastle. You could say it was just one game, sure, but so was the Hoffenheim match - and this Premier League defeat to Newcastle counts one hundered times more than a preseason friendly does.
What Tel can't do still is make decisions, release the ball effectively, and pass instead of holding onto the ball too long before making his decision. Basically, he does not play fast mentally like a Premier League winger on a Big Six club should, and it is costing Tottenham Hotspur. They need Tel to release the ball and stop dribbling it until he loses it, and until he gets better at that, he is going to keep costing Spurs in big games.
