When Mathys Tel and Mikey Moore combined to score two goals in a 3-0 win over Hoffenheim, many Tottenham Hotspur fans thought they were seeing a glimpse of the future before the impending arrivals of Manchester City duo Savio and Omar Marmoush. There was great optimism that Moore and Tel could potentially click in the 2026/27 Premier League season and prove that the future was now, as Moore played so well across from Tel that some fans were even wondering if the Lilywhites would nix the potential loan deal to FC Koln.
Meanwhile, Tel was really getting everyone to buzz, as the former Bundesliga man was Tottenham's best player in the preseason after a quietly positive 2025/26 season in which he was one of the only semi competent attacking threats for his team.
It did not take long for that good will to go out the window, though. Tel and Moore were both terrible on Matchday 1 against Brentford, and Moore was so underwhelming that he was pretty much immediately loaned off to Koln to get more experience.
Mathys Tel's displays are only getting worse
On the other hand, Tel continued to start and has only gotten worse and worse. While there are flashes of him getting by the first defender to make something happen, as was the case in the League Cup loss to Liverpool, everything else is so badly lacking that, at this point, Tottenham Hotspur fans are wondering if they would have been better off keeping Mikey Moore and loaning out Mathys Tel this summer instead.
Because while Moore missed a lot of sitters and didn't carry enough threat on the ball, at least he was getting into scoring situations and not falling over himself in the penalty area. Tel has been a turnover machine, committing more unforced errors on the ball than any other Tottenham player over the past month, which is saying something since the likes of Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush haven't exactly been secure on the ball either.
But Mathys Tel has been the biggest disappointment, and he has gone from being Spurs best player in the preseason to their worst player during the regular season, whether it is in the Premier League or the League Cup.
Tottenham made the understandable decision to send MIkey Moore out on loan for experience despite positive flashes, but Tel looks even less mentally ready than his younger attacking counterpart, to the point where they may be in a better position now if they had kept Moore instead of the Frenchman.
